Hello 8th Grade Treble parents,
We are so excited to head to State Choral Festival at Hope College on Friday, May 5. Because we are further away and will be gone during the DLMS lunch period, we will be eating in the Phelps Dining Hall on campus (right across the street from the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts). I have reserved your student a spot and the cost for lunch is $10. Please have your child bring this money to class by next Friday, April 28. PLEASE let me know if I can assist with covering this cost! I have attached the itinerary as a reminder. Have a great weekend! Mr. Goodyke

Hello Choir parents,
We are in the final lap of the school year - we are so proud of our students for pushing through these last few months and working hard. As we look forward to the summer season, I want to share a few pieces of info with you about summer camp opportunities for our DLMS students, including incoming 7th graders. In addition, Mrs. Smith & I are excited to inform you that because of successful fundraising efforts, we will be able to award summer camp scholarships to our choir students beginning this summer! Please review the following to learn about summer camps in our area: 1) Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp - your student will be able to audition for scholarships on APRIL 24 & APRIL 26 during the school day(at DLMS ONLY). Click to see the letter I will be sending home or visit www.bluelake.org for more information. 2) Knollcrest Music Camp (Calvin University) - This is a great entry-level camp that is local, takes place during the day ONLY, and costs less to attend. If your student is looking for something more comfortable and closer to home, I highly recommend this camp! Middle School week is July 24-28, 2023 and our outgoing 8th graders can attend the High School Week July 17-21, 2023. 3) There are lots of other programs in the area that you can find at the Grand Rapids Kids website including Hope Summer Repertory Theatre and Grand Rapids Civic Theatre! SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION We are so excited to give students the opportunity to apply for a music camp scholarship through Duncan Lake. Please review the following details and deadlines: - Students grades 6-8 may apply (outgoing 8th graders will qualify) - Students must be enrolled in the choir program at Kraft Meadows Intermediate or Duncan Lake MS for the 2023-2024 school year. - If a camp is not listed, information must be provided and the camp must be approved. - Scholarship awards will not exceed $300, or half the cost of the camp (minus other scholarships) - whichever is less. - Students must write a short essay to be reviewed by Music Department staff. How it works: - Applications will be due Monday, April 24. - Your application will be reviewed and you will be notified of approval before May 1. - We will send a check with your student's name on the memo line to your student’s camp in May. Please allow an additional 30 days for processing. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2023 Contact Mr. Goodyke at [email protected] with any questions. Sincerely, Mr. Goodyke & Mrs. Smith Hello 8th Grade Treble parents,
I am excited to share with you that our 8th Grade Treble Choir will be attending State Choral Festival on Friday, May 5, after receiving a "1 - Excellent" rating at our district festival. This performance will take place on the campus of Hope College (my alma mater!) at the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts. Please read the letter below for details. Note that all parents are invited to attend the performance on your own time; however, I am also looking for chaperones for this event to ride the bus. Lunch is listed as TBD since I am hoping we will be able to eat at the campus dining hall. I will be in touch once this is confirmed! Thanks, Mr. Goodyke Hello 8th Grade Choir parents,
This is a reminder that next week Friday, February 17, our 8th grade choir students will be traveling to West Ottawa Harbor Lights MS in Holland to sing with their 8th grade choirs. I am so excited to give them the opportunity to meet other singers who share the same interests & passion. We will depart DLMS around 8:00am (students will NOT go to first hour) and return by noon in time for lunch. I will also provide a snack, so all they need is a coat/water bottle if they would like. In addition, I would like to invite any of you to join us on this short field trip. There isn't really a formal performance, but I think you would enjoy seeing what these kids can do when paired with other ensembles! Please let me know if you are interested & make sure you fill out the volunteer background check on the Cal Website found here: https://www.calschools.org/downloads/district/volunteer_handbook_2022-2023.pdf I will try to send around some recordings of the event as well - it will be a blast! Hello DLMS Choir parents,
I wanted to send around the link to order Griffins tickets for our performance on Friday, February 24 @ 7:00pm.Tickets can be purchased at this LINK OR by using the code "DUNCANLAKE" on the Griffins Website. ALL attendees (including students) will need a ticket. At this point, I believe the student call time will be 6:00pm that evening, which will leave plenty of time for everyone to find their seats and hopefully get some good parking! Let me know if you have any questions about this event - we look forward to sharing our voices with the greater Grand Rapids community! Thanks, Hello DLMS Choir parents,
I hope you had a wonderful holiday break! We have a great start to the year this week and I believe we are re-adjusted to our social contract (attached below). I have a few more details regarding several of the opportunities I mentioned in my last email: 1) SIX the Musical - I will be sending out final information to parents of students who are attending separately. This is for next week Friday, January 13! 2) GRIFFINS GAME Friday, February 24 - Tickets can be purchased at this LINK OR by using the code "DUNCANLAKE" on the Griffins Website. ALL attendees (including students) will need a ticket. This will be such a fun activity for our students - let me know if you have any questions! 3) The Caledonia Middle School Players present High School Musical 2 on April 21 & 22. Auditions for the show will take place Tuesday, January 31 from 6:00pm-8:00pm and Thursday, February 2 from 3:00pm-5:00pm in the DLMS Performing Arts Center. Please contact Mr. Goodyke ([email protected]) or Mrs. Hullinger ([email protected]). ALL students are invited and encouraged to participate in this show! Please register through the Caledonia Resource Center using this link. 4) Our 7th & 8th Grade choirs will be attending MSVMA District Choral Festival on March 14, 16, or 17. I will be sending out more info mid-February, but I am hoping our performance times will be during the school day. All parents are invited to attend these performances once the times/locations are announced! In addition, I will be looking for some chaperones for these days - let me know if you are interested! 5) Broadway Q & A - We are hosting a virtual Q & A with one of the actors from "Six" next Thursday during Seminar. All of our music students at DLMS are invited and I am hoping all of our students will show up to meet our guest. We will even get to meet this person after we see the show! We are so fortunate to have these amazing opportunities in the greater Grand Rapids area. **** 8TH GRADE ONLY 6) Our 8th graders will be bussed to Caledonia High School on Tuesday, January 17 during 3rd & 4th hour to watch the Caledonia HS Choralaires give a rehearsed performance in preparation for their concert at the Michigan Music Conference. This is an amazing opportunity for ALL of our students to experience a performance of this caliber. 7) Another new thing we are trying this year is what I am calling a "Choir Collaboration". On February 17, our 8th graders will ride a bus over to West Ottawa Harbor Lights Middle School to sing with their 8th grade choir students! It will be awesome for our DLMS singers to sing alongside kids who have the same passion for and commitment to music. This will be from approximately 8am-12pm. Whew! I know it's a lot of things. All of these dates are listed on the 2022-2023 DLMS Choir Calendar and this message will be posted on our new Choir Update page on the website. Thanks for continuing to encourage your child on their musical journey! Sincerely, Mr. Goodyke Hello DLMS Choir parents,
We made it! I am so proud of our Duncan Lake choir students and all they have accomplished this year, including giving an excellent fall concert, caroling to Duncan Lake, being accepted into the State Honors Choir, and singing the National Anthem at athletic events. There are some amazing things going on at our school & we are grateful for all of your support! Please read CAREFULLY through the rest of this email, as it contains a lot of information regarding the spring. 1) Grades have been finalized and will be posted in January. Students were informed earlier this week that everything should be turned in by today. 2) We are excited that 15 of our Caledonia singers will be representing KMIS & DLMS in the MSVMA State Honors Choirs program in January! In addition, our 8th graders will have the opportunity to watch the Caledonia High School Choralaires dress rehearsal prior to their Michigan Music Conference Choral Hour performance in mid-January. 3) Please review the 22-23 CHOIR CALENDAR, specifically noting that we will be attending MSVMA District Choral Festival sometime during the week of March 14-17. In addition, you will see the finalized details for the Winter Choir Collaborative (8th grade only) and the Griffin's Game performance(ALL students). Please let me know if you have questions about the calendar. 4) GRIFFIN'S GAME - I will be sharing a link out after break to our Duncan Lake community that will include a promo code for ordering tickets online. The cost will be $20/ticket and I hope that all of our students will participate! More information on meeting times/location will be shared after break. 5) SIX, the MUSICAL - Students who reserved a ticket for this will be sent final details after break. To summarize our itinerary, we will depart around 6:30pm from DLMS and return around 10:30pm that evening. 6) There are lots of amazing musical things happening at our schools - follow Duncan Lake Middle School on Facebook to learn about our recent accomplishments and be reminded of future performances. You will also notice that we have a "DLMS Arts" section in our newsletter! 7) From now on, EVERY email update will be posted on our Choir website for reference. You can find that using this link. I shared with students today that this year has been one of the best yet since I began teaching in Caledonia. Our choir students are kind, respectful, and engaged young people and it is an honor to work with them every day. Thank you again for your support and encouragement as your students grow as singers and musicians! If you ever have a question or a concern, don't hesitate to reach out :) I wish you and your families a happy winter break! Sincerely, Mr. Goodyke |
